This session offers a focus on the importance of Phonemic Awareness in the early
years and its impact on reading and writing as students progress in the primary
grades and beyond. Teachers (both Elementary and Resource Teachers) from our
district using evidence-based phonological resources and strategies will be brought
in to highlight some of the fantastic work they’re doing with instruction in this area.
After some professional learning around Phonemic Awareness and its impact on
reading development in early grades, we will facilitate a panel discussion and sharing
time. This panel will include SD22 Kindergarten & Grade 1 Teachers who have been
using Heggerty Phonemic Awareness in their daily classroom instruction. Teachers
have so much to share about their experiences in the classroom that are key to
building a shared understanding of Phonemic Awareness instruction as a piece of the
early reading puzzle.
